How do you choose the right voice recorder for your business needs?

Voice recorders can have many differences. Whether it’s the audio quality, the storage medium or even the types of microphones it supports, there are countless different options. Today, professionals from a range of industries use voice recorders to dictate notes from meetings, to keep track of their schedules, or to record ideas that will be later transcribed using speech recognition or manually by a typist.

Simply choosing the cheapest option could end up costing you more in the long run when you find that the recorder is not sufficient for your recording needs and then need to purchase additional software or spend more money on the correct unit.

Save yourself time and money by choosing the right unit from the start, helping you and your business to become more productive and efficient.

Here are some features you should consider when choosing a voice recorder:

What will the recorder be used for?

People use voice recorders for many different reasons. Some use them to record voice clips of interviews or lectures, so a voice recorder with zoom function would be advised. Others are professional needing editing and security features for their dictation provided by a professional dictation device. And there are those who want to record their HR or company meetings in a small or large boardroom, therefore a meeting recorder with additional conference microphones will need to be considered. The first question to ask is "What do I/You want to record?"

Audio quality and clarity are important

Audio quality should be at the top of the list when deciding on the best voice recorder. Some digital audio devices can include a variable recording setting. This means that with just a simple press of a button, you will be able to record the audio quality you’ll need. A personal note-taker will have different audio quality and features to a recorder more optimized for meeting recordings which require a wider recording radius as well as noise-cancelling technology to eliminate unnecessary background noise, so it is important to understand your main recording function in order to make the correct choice of recorder.

Storage space for recordings

The last thing you want is to run out of storage space during a recording. Having plenty of storage on your device is important especially if you’re going to be recording long conversations away from your office or a computer that you can upload them to. There are even some recorders out there that offer more memory options in the form of a removable memory card. This allows for unlimited capacity which in some situations can be very useful. More advanced recorders will allow you to organize different types of media and recordings into separate folders. Do keep in mind that most voice recorders that can record at higher qualities will typically use up more space.

Battery life

Voice recorders typically come with very durable batteries that can last much longer than a device such as your smartphone, which has mixed uses. Since a voice recorder is dedicated to only recording audio, you’ll get much more longevity out of a single charge.  If you’re going to be out in the field making audio recordings for most of the day, then you’ll want a battery that can at least last 24 hours of use. Some voice recorders also use regular batteries that are disposable instead of rechargeable ones, so these might be a better option if you’re going to be away from a source of power for a long period of time.

Basic editing features

Most voice recorders come with basic recording functions and ability to record to different folders. However if you are looking for a device that allows you to insert, overwrite, append and delete within a recording, you will need to look at a more professional dictation unit that comes with this functionality. These recorders are generally more highly priced than the entry level voice recorders but it is a long-term investment that will ultimately save you time and money, helping you to work more efficiently.
